How It Started

Some nonprofits begin with an idea. WHIN Cares began with a newborn baby.

A woman holds a sleeping baby at a window.

As a foster mother, WHIN Cares’ founder welcomed a newborn home directly from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) following prenatal substance exposure. She quickly realized that bringing him home was only the beginning of his recovery journey.

Despite the complexity of his needs, she had few resources, little guidance, and no clear roadmap for caring for an infant recovering from substance exposure. She had to learn, advocate, and navigate his care largely on her own.

That experience revealed a gap no family should have to face: the space between leaving the healthcare system and learning how to safely care for a vulnerable baby at home.

Her public health education became deeply personal, transforming lived experience into a commitment to improving maternal and infant health—and ultimately inspiring the foundation of WHIN Cares.

Today, WHIN Cares works to ensure that mothers, infants, and caregivers have access to coordinated, compassionate, and culturally responsive support throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and the critical transition home—because care should not end when a family leaves the hospital.

Who We Are

WHIN Cares (Womens Holistic Integrated Network Cares) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving maternal and infant health outcomes across Detroit and Southeast Michigan. We bridge the gaps between healthcare, home, and community through culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and whole-person support.

We connect women and families to essential services, including doula care, lactation support, maternal mental health resources, health education, and trusted community resources. Our approach recognizes that health is shaped by more than medical care. Culture, language, transportation, income, trauma, trust, and access all influence a family's ability to thrive.

WHIN Cares is committed to reaching families who too often encounter barriers to care, including immigrant, refugee, Arab American, Black, and underserved communities. Through public health expertise, evidence-based practices, and strong community partnerships, we work to ensure women feel seen, heard, respected, and supported throughout pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond.

Because every woman deserves care that honors who she is, and every baby deserves the chance to survive, thrive, and grow.
